SPARK Early Literacy readers go to the carnival

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s SPARK Early Literacy Program improves the reading comprehension of kindergarten through third grade students with one-on-one tutoring, but it also features fun monthly activities for whole families to enjoy. Earlier this month, the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club hosted a wildly successful all-SPARK Carnival in its gymnasium, giving a whopping 260 SPARK participants the opportunity to play carnival-themed games and win prizes.

Immediately upon entering the Club, children were offered a goodie bag with new books and the opportunity to pose in the SPARK “Read-a-Coaster” before skipping to the gym to engage in over a dozen activities such as a candy-sorting contest, hoop and ball tossing as well as balloon popping challenges. Children also leapt in a bouncy house, sat down to get their faces painted and played guessing games. The Milwaukee Fire Department also stopped by with a fire truck for members to see in person!

The event was capped off with a meal for families to enjoy, providing they weren’t already stuffed from the snow cone, popcorn and cotton candy machines that were on site. Thank you to each of the SPARK tutors, Parent Partners and Boys & Girls Clubs staff involved for making the SPARK Carnival a success!
