Thanks to the Argosy Foundation, six Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee members have the opportunity to put their visions for community service projects into action as winners of the 2011 Argosy Citizenship Award. They were honored in a ceremony prior to the August 4 East Town Association’s “Jazz in the Park” concert held in Cathedral Square.

This year’s Argosy Citizenship Award winners proposed a variety of service projects that range from teaching etiquette to young men and women to creating a food pantry for families in need. Each honoree will receive $1,000: $500 to execute the project and $500 to spend on the member’s education. The following lists the winning Boys & Girls Club members and their service projects:

Asia Allen, age 15, from Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club, will plan and implement an Etiquette Ball for her Club. Asia’s goal is to have participants learn respectable behavior for young ladies and gentlemen while having fun. She hopes it can be implemented annually so the event becomes a tradition and being well-mannered is continued behavior.

Deshaun Hewings, age 17, is from Pieper-Hillside Boys & Girls Club and wants to aid those in the community who are in need with a drive to collect clothing and related items for families. He will also partner with the Salvation Army and donate the clothes so more people can receive the help they need.

LarSharae Hooker, age 17, belongs to Augusta M. LaVarnway Boys & Girls Club. With her award, she will host educational workshops addressing healthy living skills, child obesity, and personal hygiene, focusing on issues that most people overlook. Guest speakers will be invited to speak and LarSharae will have educational packets for families to help them practice healthy living.

Fabiola Magaña, age 15, belongs to the Mitchell Integrated Arts School Boys & Girls Club. Her plan is to build a chicken coop for Casa Maria Women and Children Hospitality Home as part of its efforts to promote healthy living. Once the coop is completed, residents of Casa Maria can raise the chickens and collect their eggs.

Savannah Monroy, age 11, attends Lincoln Avenue School Boys & Girls Club. She plans to hold a neighborhood cleanup in and around her school and host a post cleanup party with games and food to celebrate helping the community. She’ll also organize a gardening lesson, where Club members will learn how to keep gardens healthy.

Alethia Tilford, age 14, from Roger & Leona Fitzsimonds Boys & Girls Club, plans to start a food pantry at her Club. Alethia’s plan is to have parents volunteer for two hours a month in order to receive food from the pantry. She will start her project in the fall by offering a soup and bread night for families, with help from neighborhood sponsors.
