Before any holes were drilled or nails hammered on June 2 at Camp Whitcomb/Mason, KaBOOM! asked Boys & Girls Club members to draw pictures of what they imagined in their dream playground. From these crayon drawings, KaBOOM! designers developed plans that reflected the kids’ “must have” items such as slides, bridges, swings and climbing walls. Then, there was only one thing left to do – build!

After a rousing opening speech by Jim Clark, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, the one-day KaBOOM! playground build began with a flurry of activity.

Over 200 people built the new playground in seven hours at Camp Whitcomb/Mason. By the end of the day,
volunteers from Northwestern Mutual, Boys & Girls Clubs and the community had assembled a colorful playground complete with park benches, tables, murals and shelters for shade.

The playground installation was made possible thanks to a gift from Northwestern Mutual in honor of its retiring Chairman & CEO Ed Zore and his wife Diane, a Board Trustee of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating places for kids to play across the country, led the playground’s design and construction.

Although Camp staff members keep youngsters busy with a wide range of activities on more than 300 green acres, a playground for children far from home represents safety, comfort and familiarity. The new KaBOOM! playground ensures that Club kids will feel at home so they can better appreciate the beauty of nature surrounding them.
