A different kind of pomp and circumstance was heard as African drums announced the 2008-2009 graduating class of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s Stein Scholars Program. A special recognition ceremony was held recently inside
Marquette
University’s Alumni Memorial Union. The Stein Scholars program introduces high school juniors and seniors to skills that will help them with their education and in life: good study habits, time management and how to organize and set their priorities.
To celebrate their transition from high school graduates to incoming college freshmen, Stein Scholars and their families took part in a special Kente Celebration. One by one, the students and their parents or role model joined hands and faced each other. Staff members from the Stein Scholars Program read what each student wrote thanking the important people in their lives. The adults welcomed their teen into adulthood by placing a kente stole around their necks. By the ceremony’s end, hardly a dry eye could be found in the room.
In addition to the emotional send off, Marty Stein’s sons, Dan and Larry, shared with members how much education meant to their father and that it was his vision to help deserving students attend college. To remind each Club member that they can make a positive difference in the world, the Steins gave each student a starfish key chain – a nod to one of their father’s beloved, inspirational stories.
In all, 39 graduating seniors will be attending a college or university this fall. Of this number five received full scholarships, including one Gates Millennium Scholarship recipient. It covers the full cost of attendance for a student to obtain an undergraduate, graduate and/or professional degree -- whatever type of degrees or degrees that the student can accomplish in 12 years will be covered. Other Stein Scholars received scholarships from various organizations. The program also matched their education savings up to $4,000 per student through the Clubs’ Individual Development Account (IDA) Program.
As for all of the love and encouragement received by the Stein Scholars from their supporters, Club member Diamonique Felder’s message to her mom says it best. In her short essay, she quotes the late rapper Tupac Shakur: ‘And there's no way I can pay you back/But my plan is to show you that I understand/You are appreciated.’”
