Earn & Learn Program Launches Young Workers

With support from the City of Milwaukee’s Workforce Investment Board, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee recently welcomed 192 teens into its Earn & Learn job program – part of the Clubs’ World of Work initiative. World of Work teaches members the leadership and job skills they will need to succeed beyond high school.

Earn & Learn employs Club teens and other youth who range in age from 14 to 18. They will work 16 hours a week starting June 22 through Aug. 21.

During their initial training, the young staffers underwent a job skills assessment. Their individual results will allow Boys & Girls Clubs adult staff to identify specific areas where teens are in need of additional training and instruction. Teens will receive three to four hours of additional training throughout the summer based on their assessments and areas of interest.

For many of the young Club members, Earn & Learn will be their first work experience and all are excited about the opportunity.

“I wanted a job this summer and to earn money,” says Kristann, a Daniels-Mardak Boys & Girls Club member about her decision to apply for an Earn & Learn spot. “From this experience, I hope to gain more leadership skills and show that I am the best candidate for the job.”

Thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee and the City of Milwaukee’s Workforce Investment Board, Earn & Learn will give Kristann and other teens like her the chance to prove they’re valuable employees.
