Stein Scholars College Prep Program
April never met Marty Stein, but she’s familiar with his concern for nurturing
Milwaukee’s talented young people. “He sent my aunt to college and then to get her master’s degree,” she says.
Stein is sending April to college through one of his last wishes – a unique college preparation and mentorship program to increase the number of college graduates coming from impoverished backgrounds. Thanks to him, April was among the first 36 students to become a Stein Scholar. In its first two years, the program aided 72 students pursue their higher education goals.
Those who knew Stein – a local businessman, philanthropist and former chair of the Boys & Girls Clubs Board of Trustees – recall his supportive nature when it came to befriending young people, including Club members. He ardently believed in education as the best means for children to escape poverty. When he passed away in 2006, he endowed funds to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee to create a program that would help youth attend and succeed in college. Together with his family, we developed the structure for the Stein Scholars College Prep Program. It guides students from college preparation through sophomore year with college advising and mentoring.
