Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee held its annual MVP Salute to Youth presented by Johnson Bank event at the Pfister Hotel earlier this month, honoring outstanding members and organizations in the Milwaukee community. The event welcomed nearly 600 guests and raised more than $400,000 for Boys & Girls Clubs programming.
Youth of the Year Alethia Tilford was honored at the event for her accomplishments in 11 years at the Clubs, in which she maintained a 4.0 grade point average, juggled two part-time jobs, was team captain of three sports and won a U.S. Presidential Scholar award. The MVP award went to Senator Herb Kohl, who offered funny and endearing stories about his friend and presenter, former Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. Kohl was honored for his numerous contributions to the community as an advocate for Boys & Girls Clubs, such as his role as co-author for a piece of legislation that made federal funding for Boys & Girls Clubs an “annual event.” To date, Kohl has visited every Boys & Girls Club in the state of Wisconsin. Other awardees included Chuck Harvey, Manpower Group and Kris Rappé, who reminded guests that “the fate of Milwaukee, our country, and our world is predicated on the health and the capabilities of our children.”
The evening also reminded us that Boys & Girls Clubs is transforming thousands of young lives with the help of people like our donors and many sponsors. If you watch the news, you are aware of the struggles facing many of our community’s young people, but with your support, we have the power to provide life-changing opportunities for children and teens to help them stay safe, overcome obstacles and focus on promising futures ahead. We are also grateful to our co-chairs Chris Abele and Tina Chang as well as the guests who purchased raffle tickets, Club member art, centerpieces and made monetary contributions in support of our mission. Thank you to those that attended!
