Club girls receive unique career and self-discovery opportunities

Over the past year, hundreds of Club girls participated in experiential learning opportunities thanks to generous donors from the 2014 Year of the G.I.R.L. event. In preparation for the upcoming event, we are recapping a few of the many great opportunities that fostered character-building and career-oriented growth this year.

The Milwaukee Business Journal invited six Club girls to the publication’s offices for a behind-the-scenes experience. Director of Audience Development Sandy Wysocki hosted the girls for an in-depth tour of the company’s facilities. The girls met with advertising designers to create an advertisement about the importance of Celebrating G.I.R.L.S that will run in a future issue of the publication, then watched a reporter record a radio spot. Another reporter even had the girls assist her in drafting a social media post about one of the Milwaukee Business Journal’s latest stories to publish on her own Twitter account.

Celebrating G.I.R.L.S opportunities were in no short supply this year, as six Club girls also received a fascinating look at area bridges under construction thanks to the bridge construction specialists at Zenith Tech, Inc. The girls were driven out to bridges in Pewaukee, the zoo interchange and one under construction by our Fitzsimonds Boys & Girls Club on North Avenue in Milwaukee by our trustee and Zenith Tech President David Bechthold. Our youth learned about the logistics of building these massive and important structures and about the field of engineering.

Je Suis Talent joined in the festivities this summer by inviting eight Club girls to take part in Girl Power Model Mania, an event aimed at building self-pride and expression in young women. Our Club members identified and discussed positive aspects of their identities with their peers. The girls also learned about poise and posture on the model run-way before designing their own t-shirts. A few of our Club members even took part in a back-to-school fashion show at Bayshore Town Center.

We’re grateful to our trustees Mark Sabljak and David Bechthold as well as Milwaukee Business Journal, Zenith Tech and Je Suis Talent for providing such fun and educational experiences for our youth!
