Program Outcomes

Through Decade of Hope, we’ve enhanced programming and deepened the impact we have with our members. Below are some of the positive outcomes Boys & Girls Clubs’ programming has created for the children of Milwaukee
. For additional information on outcomes, read our 2010-2011 Report to the Community.

Academic Success

  • SPARK Early Literacy Program results continue to be impressive. During the 2009-2010 school year, SPARK served 441 participants. Their reading at grade level increased dramatically from 10 percent to 51 percent.

  • Stein Scholars College Preparatory Program expanded in 2010 to help more high school students meet the academic standards required to enter college. In 2010, Stein Scholars served 260 students at 48 local high schools and 30 colleges and universities nationwide.

Civic Engagement

  • We expanded our civic engagement programs, particularly for teens, with much success: Youth for Unity, Northwestern Mutual Foundation Youth of the Year program and The Brotherhood (males only) have all expanded using best practices learned from our girls-only Sista Pride initiative. Two new civic engagement programs, One Voice N You and the Community ACTion Fund, were introduced in 2010. Both give Club teens in the Lindsay Height neighborhood hands-on experience in community development.

  • Our North Division High School Boys & Girls Club is a hub of teen programming. Since its official opening in early 2010, it has an emphasis on programs that empower teens to realize their vision for improving the community by giving them the resources to plan and implement service activities. Our newest teen-centered Boys & Girls Club at James Madison High School follows suit.

Health & Awareness

  • To ensure our members’ nutritional needs are met, we further expanded the Evening Meal Initiative in 2010. In total, we served nearly 4,000 meals each school day to central-city youth at 37 sites and more than 1 million meals and snacks total.

  • Boys & Girls Club members are also learning to make healthy food choices and take care of their bodies. In 2009, 325 Eat Smart participants helped plant and urban garden, worked with neighborhood stores to increase access to healthy foods and learned how to prepare nourishing meals.
