Larsharae Hooker

Lasharae Hooker, Augusta M. LaVarnway Boys & Girls Club

Anticipated Career Choice: Criminal Lawyer

“The Club taught me how to be a leader, how to be responsible and how to solve problems in different ways.”

LaSharae understands what it takes to be a leader and teaches others through her actions how they can achieve goals. At night, she is at home cooking, cleaning, helping her sisters with homework and doing other chores in order to give her mother time to relax because her father has been incarcerated since she was an infant.

When Larsharae was in seventh grade, her family’s house caught on fire and destroyed everything. This experience taught her about compassion, “In Milwaukee you have people who pretend to care and people who really care. I really care.” She finds time to help other Club members with their homework and reading skills. As a youth worker at her Club, Larsharae empowers others to be responsible and do their best even when they feel they are not capable of achieving personal goals.

At school, Larsharae is a part of student council, the volleyball team, Service Learning, the Restorative Justice program and the mock trial competition. At her Club, she is active in Stein Scholars and Keystone Club, and also assists with running the Power Hour program. Larsharae has become a strong voice for the Club and the community. She even volunteered herself as head of the community service board of teens.

Larsharae understands she has to stay focused in order to move forward in her quest of being a productive citizen. She carries herself with the quiet confidence, warmness and maturity of an individual who knows she is going to be successful. Upon graduating from college, Larsharae wants to start her own law firm and possibly a community center for underprivileged teens. She is well-prepared to show her peers and family that hard work and determination can, and will, lead to success.

“I am going to continue pursuing my dreams, setting an example for my younger siblings and making my family proud. By accomplishing my dreams, my children will not have to suffer from poverty and will have someone positive to look up to.”
