Health & Life Skills

Jose does not know varicella from pneumococcus or polio from hepatitis B, but thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, he will never have worry about these diseases.

Jose recently received his childhood immunizations at the Don & Sallie Davis Boys & Girls Club. These immunizations, offered in conjunction with the City of Milwaukee Health Department, ensure the health of our members and of our community.

A Wide Array of Healthy Programs

From growing gardens with delicious fresh fruit and vegetables to offering hearing and eye screenings, the Clubs encourage active lifestyles and nutritious eating among its members. After all, healthy kids become healthy, productive adults.

The Clubs also promote good choices and avoiding negative behaviors. Avoiding alcohol and drugs, finding non-violent solutions to disputes and maintaining positive relations with others are vital skills members learn at the Clubs.

A Sample of Unique Health & Life Skills Programming

Fighting Back Soccer combines a soccer league for members ages 6-12 with fun lessons about the importance of making positive choices. Before a game, members see a skit, hear a performance or participate in an interactive event that teaches important lessons about being an engaged, healthy young person.

SMART Moves promotes responsible behavior and avoiding alcohol, drugs and negative choices. More than preaching a just say “no” message, however, the program involves youth in role-playing, discussions and debates to help members develop the assertiveness and confidence they need to avoid negative behaviors.

Eat Smart educates youth on nutrition and the science of growing healthy food. It involves a 12-week education plan that includes planting a garden and harvesting the food for a fall banquet. At the end of the program, members include more fruits, vegetables and whole grains in their diet than they did previously.
