Divontae Beamon-Morris, Daniels-Mardak Boys & Girls Club

High School: Harold S. Vincent High School

Anticipated Career Choice: Engineering

DiVontae has been the man of the house for most of his life. He lives with his mom and five sisters. DiVontae loves his family and wouldn’t give it up for anything. He grew up quickly without a father figure. This past year, DiVontae got his driver’s license and always offered to pick up or drop off his sisters so that his mother can stay at work. He also secured a job at Boys & Girls Clubs to help out with family finances.

At the Clubs, DiVontae acted as a great role model for others. He was at the Club every day for eleven years. With his knowledge of the Clubs, DiVontae served as an ambassador and helped bring in many members from his schools and the surrounding community. DiVontae felt most at home in the Clubs, especially when helping others. He helped younger Club members with homework without being asked, worked at a concession stand and served as a mentor for the youth who looked up to him.

In the community, DiVontae helped serve the homeless at “The Gathering” meal program, helped at the Housing Authority, worked at Westlawn cleaning up everyday during the summer and tutored at the Milwaukee College Preparatory School. On top of all of his activities, DiVontae kept his priorities intact and is moved forward with his mission to graduate high school and becoming a college student.

When he switched high schools, he set a goal to raise his GPA and ended up far exceeding his expectations. DiVontae worked with Stein Scholars for two years to make sure he was ready for college. Beyond his education, he is looking toward a career in computer engineering, possibly in game design. Ever since he participated on his Club’s Robotics Team, DiVontae knew he wanted to be an engineer. He also wants to get a minor in business so he can own his own engineering or game designing company.

DiVontae sums up his experience quite well: “Without the Club, I honestly don’t know where I would be right now. Not only does it provide fun for me, but also a paycheck because I have been a youth worker in the Clubs for three years.”
